2 Quotes - On Man and On fighting injustice Aug. 21st, 2004 @ 11:57 pm
Tiger got to hunt,
Bird got to fly;
Man got to sit and wonder, "Why, why, why?"
Tiger got to sleep,
Bird got to land;
Man got to tell himself he understand.

-Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle (Ch. 81)

Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, which crossing each other from a million different points, creates a tide which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression. - Robert Kennedy

On freedom and happiness Aug. 8th, 2004 @ 01:57 am
You see ... that ancient legend about paradise ... Why, it's about us, about today. Yes! Just think. Those two, in paradise, were given a choice: happiness without freedom, or freedom without happiness. There was no third alternative. Those idiots chose freedom, and what came of it? Of course, for ages afterward they longed for the chains. The chains-- you understand? That's what world sorrow was about. For ages! And only we have found the way of restoring happiness. ... No, wait, listen further! The ancient God and we-- side by side, at the same table. Yes! We have helped God ultimately to conquer the devil--for it was he who had tempted men to break the ban and get a taste of ruinous freedom, he, the evil serpent. And we, we've brought down our boot over his little head, and-- cr-runch! Now everything is fine-- we have paradise again. Again we are as innocent and simplehearted as Adam and Eve. No more of that confusion about good and evil. Everything is simple-- heavenly, childishly simple. The Benefactor, the Machine, the Cube, the Gas Bell, the Guardians-- all this is good, all this is sublime, magnificent, noble, elevated, crystally pure. Because it protects our unfreedom-- that is, our happiness. The ancients would begin to talk and think and break their heads-- ethical, unethical ... Well, then. In short, what about such a paradisiac poem, eh? And, of course, in the most serious tone ... You understand? Quite something, eh? -Yevgeny Zamyatin, We (Eleventh Entry, p. 55)

On thinking Aug. 3rd, 2004 @ 11:17 pm
"You scientists  think  too much," blurted Miss Pefko. She laughed idiotically. Dr. Breed's friendliness had blown every fuse in her nervous system. She was no longer responsible. "You  all think too much."

A winded, defeated-looking fat woman in filthy coveralls trudged beside us, hearing what Miss Pefko said. She turned to examine Dr. Breed, looking at him with helpless reproach. She hated people who thought too much. At that moment, she struck me as an appropriate representative for almost all mankind.

The fat woman's expression implied that she would go crazy on the spot if anybody did any more thinking.

I think that many people who are “pro choice” are glad that they were born before 1973. Otherwise, they might not be able to make choices. - Mike S. Adams

On democracy among the guns Jul. 31st, 2004 @ 11:28 pm
Asking about a future Palestinian state was like applying cloves to the aching tooth. Arafat's fury was transformed almost at once into sentiment, into a long, cloying résumé of his personal dreams. Palestine would be 'a democratic oasis in the Middle East', it would be 'a liberal democracy'. Democracy -- the word if not the political system -- seemed to obsess him.

'We are proud of our democracy in the revolution,' he said. 'It is the hardest and most difficult kind of democracy -- because it is democracy among the guns. But we have succeeded in creating a democracy and those freedom fighters who have been given a democracy will continue to have democracy in their independent state.' Democracy, democracy, democracy. The word seemed to have the same effect on Arafat as 'terrorism' had for the Israelis. If you went on saying it often enough, anything could be justified. Better still, you might end up believing in it.

Israelis Jul. 31st, 2004 @ 01:49 am
I got a call from an Israeli officer ... to warn me that Christians were likely to fire in our direction. He ... came on the radio, made his excuses and shouted: 'The Christians are going to fire in about six seconds - five - four - three - two - one.' And a couple of seconds later, shells started landing behind the United Nations lines. How was he so accurate? ... He was doing the shooting.

Paranoia Jul. 30th, 2004 @ 10:44 pm
Your paranoia has made you so hostile and so blind, that even if you see a member having a picture Arafat as his avatar with "war criminal" written on it, you would call him a pro-Arab terrorist. - Me
